Producing Panel with Mynette Louie and David Barba

Mynette Louie is a New York-based producer, and winner of the 2013 Independent Spirit Piaget Producers Award. She produced Marshall Lewy’s CALIFORNIA SOLO starring Robert Carlyle (Sundance 2012); Patricia Benoit’s STONES IN THE SUN starring Edwidge Danticat (Tribeca 2012); Doug Karr’s ART MACHINE starring Joseph Cross, Jessica Szohr, and Joey Lauren Adams (Woodstock 2012); and Tze Chun’s critically acclaimed CHILDREN OF INVENTION (Sundance 2009) and forthcoming thriller COLD COMES THE NIGHT starring Alice Eve, Logan Marshall-Green, and Bryan Cranston, which will be released by Sony. She was the consulting producer on Olivia Silver’s ARCADIA starring John Hawkes (Crystal Bear Award, Berlinale 2012), executive produced THE KITCHEN starring Laura Prepon, Bryan Greenberg, and Dreama Walker (Gen Art 2012, Closing Night), and co-produced Andrew Bujalski’s MUTUAL APPRECIATION (SXSW, Top 10 films of 2006–EW, Village Voice, Film Comment, Artforum, etc.). Louie serves on advisory boards for the Sundance Institute, IFP, and A3 Asian American Artists Foundation; has been a consultant for international sales agent Visit Films; and was named as one of Ted Hope’s “21 Brave Thinkers Of Truly Free Film.” Louie previously worked at the Hawaii Film Office, where she authored the state’s production tax credit, and in business development and marketing at SportsIllustrated.com, Jupiter Research, and Time Magazine. A native New Yorker, Louie graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University, where she studied Chinese literature and film. David Barba was born in Monterrey, Mexico and raised in Mexico City by his Mexican father and Scottish mother. He received a BA from Stanford University. After working in the film industries in New York, London and Mexico City, David attended the Columbia University School of the Arts, receiving an MFA in Film. His feature documentary POP STAR ON ICE made with James Pellerito, screened at several festivals around the world, had a limited theatrical release at IFC Center in New York and aired on Sundance Channel. David completed two seasons of his television series BE GOOD JOHNNY WEIR which aired on Sundance Channel and LOGO. David is currently in post-production on two documentary feature films, one about ballet dancer Marcelo Gomes and the other about high school cheerleading. He is a founding partner of Retribution Media, a film and television production company based in Manhattan.
