Screening excerpts from different iconic narrative films with dance in them or dance films, Alla Kovgan will share her process of developing a narrative dance film feature and writing a dance film script.  Born in Moscow, Alla Kovgan has been sharing her time between Russia and the US since 1996 making films, installations, and stage intermedia performances as well as teaching and curating dance film and avante-garde cinema around the world: www.kinodance.com Alla’s acclaimed film NORA, made in collaboration with a British filmmaker David Hinton and a Zimbabwe-born choreographer Nora Chipaumire, has been presented at over 120 festivals and received 30 awards in every kind of genre (fiction, documentary, and video art). It was broadcast on ARTE/ZDF, PBS, TV3 (Spain), NRK (Norway) and SVT (Sweden). Within last 5 years, Alla co-directed, wrote and edited two documentary features for broadcast: an Emmy-nominated TRACES OF THE TRADE (PBS) about the role of the North in the US slave-trade and MOVEMENT REVOLUTION AFRICA (ARTE/ZDF, France) about Contemporary Dance traditions in Africa, which “Village Voice” described as a “knockout”. Alla also edited MY PERESTROIKA about the last generation of Soviet children to grow up behind the Iron Curtain in the USSR, which premiered at Sundance and was also broadcast on PBS. Alla is a recipient of many awards including a Poynter Fellowship at Yale University (2012), Bogliasco Foundation Fellowship (2012), Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship (2009) and Brother Thomas Fellowship (2009) for artists working at a high level of excellence and creativity.
