Drawing a Line from my Body Straight to You

A Dance Film Lab Master Class  with Collective Settlement, made possible with AUNTS
Collective Settlement will be sharing, teaching, leading, and letting go of the process they used in creating Drawing a Line from my Body Straight to You, a dance video installation based on the Exquisite Corpse form.  The group will be divided up, the body will be dissected, and we will create a solo for an ever changing body that will be randomly reassembled through video.  We will draw, write, move, direct, and shoot video. As a whole we will make a finished piece to watch as we near the end of our evening together. Collective Settlement is a mutating gathering of friends making art together.  Current members include, but are not limited to: Felicia Ballos, Jean Brennan, Elizabeth Castagna, and Brian Doyle.  Turning domestic rituals into everyday choreographies, feeling the movement of the universe, performing for nobody and everybody, and documenting along the way…. each member of Collective Settlement shifts between videographer, dancer, set designer, and brainchild…. flipping between making movement based art, with process as product, and creating highly structured environments…. based in Beacon, influenced by the landscapes of the Hudson Valley, and calling University Settlement Camp their headquarters…..dance hikes have turned into installations intended to connect viewers to their own visceral wilderness. AUNTS is about having dance happen. The dance you’ve already seen, that pops into your head, that is known and expected and unknown and unexpected. Dance that seeps into the cracks of street lights, subway commotion, magazine myth, drunk nights at the bar, the family album, and the couch where you lay and softly glance at the afternoon light coming in through the window. AUNTS constantly tests a model of producing dance/performance/parties. A model that supports the development of current, present, and contemporary dancing. A model that expects to be adopted, adapted, replicated, and perpetuated by any person who would like to use it. Where performing can last five seconds or five hours; never a “work in progress.” Where the work of performing is backed by the “land of plenty” rather than “there is not enough.” Where the work of AUNTS defies the regulation of institution, capitalism, and consumerism. AUNTS is about being gracious in this world.
