Dance for the Camera Out-of-Doors at Duke University

September 30, 2011 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Free
The Duke University Dance Program, in collaboration with Dance Films Association, is proud to host a series of dance films for the first-ever program Dance for the Cameras Out-Doors, held on the Quad of Duke University East Campus. Admission is free, and visitors are encouraged to bring blankets. Free popcorn will be provided, and in the case of rain, the event will be held at the Ark Dance Studio on campus. The films will be a selection of DFA’s films as well as works by students in the Duke Dance Program Dance for the Camera course. The program is a wonderful way to not only invite students, but residents of the Triangle in North Carolina to view and appreciate the creative blending of dance and film. A program of the films selected is included below, and for more information, please go to the calendar at Duke Dance Program.   THE MYSTERIES OF NATURE Dahci Ma, 2008, South Korea; 10mins Torn into bits and gone with the wind. FLYING LESSON Phil Harder, Rosanne Chamecki, Andrea Lerner, USA, 2007; 4’37m (Winner of the 2008 Jury Prize) A sweet sail one foot above Brooklyn, accomplished by Rosanne Chamecki and Andrea Lerner who are old friends from their native Brazil. EBONY GODDESS:  Queen of Ilê Aiyê Carolina Moraes-Liu, 2009; Bahia, 24mins Three women compete to be the carnival queen of Ilê Aiyê. The selection is based on Afro-centric notions of beauty, in counterpoint to prevailing standards of beauty in Brazil. Contestants dress in flowing African-style garments and perform traditional Afro-Brazilian dances and songs. NORA Alla Kovgan and David Hinton, 2008, USA/UK; 35m Choreographed by Nora Chipaumire, and produced by Joan Frosch NORA is a dense and swiftly moving poem of  sound and image, alternately tragic and comic. A fiercely embattled African girl experiences the joys and disappointments of love, and struggles against intimidation and violence to gain her independence. Shot entirely on location in Southern Africa, NORA includes a multitude of local performers and dancers of all ages, from schoolchildren to grandmothers, with rousing music by Zimbabwean legend Thomas Mapfumo.
