Class Description Have you ever shot a video and felt that images don’t look “right?”  If you are wondering why the images you capture lack luster, then this workshop is for you!  Telling a compelling story with video is not just about getting movement and/or dialog on camera that you can string together in the edit bay. The art of video comes down to manipulating the physical light surrounding your subject on set, understanding how the camera captures this light, and knowing how to manipulate this captured light during postproduction.  Learning to control light and color on set and in post will allow you to establish mood, manipulate audience focus, represent a sense of internal conflict, portray time of day/passage of time, allude to an environmental location, or even transport your audience to another country or historic period. In this 2.5 hour workshop you will learn about special camera techniques and cheap DIY ways of lighting a scene. We will also cover an introduction to color grading techniques in post production with an emphasis on fundamentals that are cross platform and useful in every editing program. Questions addressed include: What makes an image pop (contrast/saturation/brightness/black-level), what to look for in color balance, when is basic “relighting” possible, how to achieve looks/moods/metaphoric enhancements, what are the limitations of certain codecs, how to use video scopes to evaluate an image, and more. Guest Teacher Jason Bahling (www.jasonbahling.com) is a videographer, colorist, and time based artist. His videos have shown nationally and internationally in numerous galleries, film festivals, and performances. While he has actively participated in most arenas of freelance video design and big budget film production, Jason primarily enjoys collaborating with choreographers, musicians, and theatre companies. Jason is also a founding partner of The Notion Collective (http://notioncollective.com), a multidisciplinary art collective that creates web art, public art, performance art, social practice art, video art, and installations. Recent collaborations include “Circling” with Douglas Rosenberg and Sally Gross, “Daughter” with Li Chiao-Ping Dance, “After the Final Curtain” with BODYART dance, and “4 Chambers” with Jody Oberfelder Dance Projects. Still from Circling, Directed by Douglas Rosenberg. Choreography and performance, Sally Gross. Editing and Color Grading by Jason Bahling who will be leading the workshop!
