Mia (Leah Pipes) is a beauty with a promising career as a professional ballroom dancer. Armando (EJ Bonilla), is the son of Puerto Rican immigrants who does menial work at a dance studio in exchange for lessons. One night, Armando and Mia share a heated moment on the dance floor; minutes later a car accident changes Mia’s life forever. Despite her rebuffs, Armando dedicates himself to helping her overcome her tragedy by steering her into a wheelchair ballroom competition. At the heart of the film is a group of eclectic characters, each with his/her own story. As she demonstrates in “Desperately Seeking Susan,” Seidelman has a special feel for New York City. Her film pulsates with energy and zest, embracing its characters, their conflicts and their courage.
