Crab World

Company director, choreographer and dancer Daniel Gwirtzman collaborated with filmmaker Rafael Silva de Carvalho on this brief film, shot in a craggy clearing in Misericórdia, Bahia, a small town on the island of Itaparica. Daniel says, “Its landscape recalled the moon with its cratered surface.”” This otherworldliness extends to Gwirtzman’s inhuman movements. Heavy rains bracketed the shoot, and in between a setting sun and rainbow, adding to the mystery of the locale. Finding inspiration from the limitless number of crabs in the sand and water, Gwirtzman imagines life from a crab’s perspective. It’s a Crab’s World after all. An abstract meditation on nature. Filmed in Brazil
