Find out how the fair use doctrine allows you to use copyrighted works in your films while also defining the boundaries of others’ unauthorized uses of your own works. Join Peter Jaszi, J.D., internationally-re- nowned copyright scholar and professor at American University Washington College of Law, and Liz Jack- son, J.D., Legal Counsel at Dance Heritage Coalition, for a brief presentation on copyright law, followed by case studies and a Q & A moderated by Libby Smigel. Jaszi advises many filmmakers on the legal issues they face making and distributing their films, including fair use of copyrighted works, licensing, and rights of privacy. He is the co-author of the Documentary Filmmakers’ Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use. A former dancer, Jackson facilitates the use of fair use by dance scholars, archivists, and librarians. Smigel is the Executive Director of Dance Heritage Coalition and spearheaded the production of the Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use of Dance-Related Materials.
