Dance Film Lab: Do The Dance Cartel: DO YOU – Make Your Own Dance Video Tutorial with Ani Taj

February 29, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

$5 – $15
Ani Taj - photo by Stephen Elledge   Taking The Dance Cartel’s video tutorial series, Do The Dance Cartel, as well as archival video tutorials and writing from Dance Films Association’s collection, as points of departure, we’ll examine what it is to generate, name, and share isolated movements in the form of a dance tutorial. Developing a vocabulary around one’s unique and idiosyncratic styles of movement is an important step in representing it to the world. What is your language for creating, teaching and describing your dance? Stephen Stivo Arnozy, the Cartel’s resident video designer and DTDC (Do The Dance Cartel) co-creator, will join us for a few instant video experiments with the class and hands-on demo of how a DTDC video is created.   Inspired by the DFA Archive: excerpt from Dance on Camera News Dance Films Association, INC. November- December 1984 Deirdre Towers, Editor HOW TO’S How To’s have been a safe investment for most book publishers since the “me generation” endorsed self-improvement. It’s equally safe to assume that the how-to videos will have a good market. While it may be too early to predict whether teaching tapes will outsell performance and experimental tapes, certainly the smash success of Jane Fonda’s workout tapes builds confidence in that direction. The use of video in classroom as well as home is just beginning. Lecture-demonstrations and master classes have been the mainstay for most companies on tour in their efforts to reach a broad base of the community. It may not be too far in the future when every company sells tapes along with their tee-shirts at intermission.   Requirements: Bring signature moves, clothing you can get down in, a song you can’t not dance to, maybe an iPhone, and definitely a sense of humor.   About Ani Taj: Native New Yorker ANI TAJ is a choreographer, performer, music head and founder of The Dance Cartel. She choreographs contemporary musicals, plays, concerts, music videos, art parties, flash mobs and more. She is fueled by research trips to Brazil and loves to make dances inspired by Carnaval. Since 2012, The Dance Cartel’s acclaimed event ONTHEFLOOR has toured diverse spaces including Ace Hotel NY, Velocity Dance Center, Bootleg Theater (LA), Brooklyn Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Le Poisson Rouge, Space Gallery (Portland, ME), Espaco Xisto (Brazil), and more. The Cartel’s latest creation, Wet Clutch, has received initial support from the NYLA Studio Series, La MaMa Moves! and a 2016 LMCC Creative Engagement award. The company has been featured in music videos for Yoko Ono, Reggie Watts, Vic Mensa, Sarh, and The Sway Machinery. While bridging gaps between dance and music scenes, Ani keeps one foot firmly in the world of live theatre. Recent projects include Lazarus (NYTW – Assoc. Choreo), NOIR (SAF), The Nomad by Liz Swados (The Flea), Good Men Wanted (ANTFest, Arena Stages), Love’s Labour’s Lost (Shakespeare in the Park – Asst. Choreo), Jesse Eisenberg’s Asuncion (Rattlestick), and several projects with Les Freres Corbusier. Upcoming: Runaways by Liz Swados (City Center Encores!) Ani is an Adjunct Professor of dance and movement at NYU (Experimental Theatre Wing, Playwrights Horizons).
