Camera Movement and Aesthetics with John C. Koch

Led by John C. Koch, director and cinematographer working in dance film, narrative and documentary, the second Dance Film Lab of 2014 will focus on the aspect of camera movement in dance film. Considering the camera as an integral element of the work rather than observer of a performance, and discussing different practical strategies for choreographing the camera, this lab will show participants an overview of camera rigs and allow participants to explore selected gear hands-on. John C. Koch John C. Koch is a New York City-based writer/director, cinematographer, editor, and photographer working in narrative, documentary, dance film and video design. “Surface Tension,” John’s latest dance film, premiered at Dances Made to Order in July 2013. His latest feature narrative, “Stalemate”, will premiere in 2014. As a video designer and dance filmmaker he has collaborated with theater and dance artists Victoria Murphy, Angela Patrinos, Live Action Set, Vanessa Voskuil, Sachiko Nishiuchi, and Zorongo Flamenco. His work has also been screened by TPT-2 (PBS affiliate), Walker Art Center, Ritz Theater, Southern Theater, Riverview Theater, Moves11 Festival, and Williamsburg Independent Film Festival. John has a BFA in Photography from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. http://www.johnckoch.com
