Leading Digital Media Expert Paul Galando Elected President of Dance Films Association

For Immediate Release

New York, NY (April 7, 2016)  –  In its 60th anniversary year, Dance Films Association announces the selection of Paul Galando as President of its Board of Directors.  We look forward eagerly to Galando’s leadership as the organization prepares for its 45th Dance On Camera Festival, co-presented with the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

Paul Galando has been a leading advocate, educator, and artist in digital film development and technology.  His mission has been twofold: to create partnerships, collaborations and opportunities for filmmakers and dancemakers to utilize digital technologies as a means of building their audiences; and to help artists gain access to resources that can sustain their continued artistic work.  Paul has launched several digital media companies, is a founding faculty member and pioneering university program developer as Director of Dance and New Media at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and recently launched and directs the new Digital Technology Initiative at Gibney Dance — a trailblazing open community dance organization with state of the art facilities in NYC.  As a media artist and philanthropist, Galando has nurtured partnerships and collaborations with other world-class institutions including 92Y’s Harkness Dance Center, Merce Cunningham Trust, Martha Graham Dance Company, and New York City Ballet.

With his trademark enthusiasm, Galando reports: “I am just so honored to be elected to this position of leadership by the DFA Board of Directors.  I am passionate about galvanizing the efforts of our board members, whether relative newcomers or those who have paved the way with their service for more than three decades.”

Galando brings a wealth of experience to his new role at Dance Films Association, having previously presided as its Chair of Education and Vice President of the Board of Directors.  During his first 3 years at DFA, he developed new partnerships with major dance and media organizations and chaired highly successful Kickoff Galas as part of the Dance on Camera Festival.  In addition, he created new education initiatives, worked to preserve and disseminate 60 years of dance films for educational development, led teaching workshops with high school students as part of DFA’s Capturing Motion NYC program, and was directly responsible for extensive fundraising efforts.

A glance at Paul’s ambitious To-Do List for the coming year includes: increasing partnerships and educational programs for secondary schools and universities; serving as editor and publisher of DFA’s Dance on Camera Journal; creating new ties with commercial film companies in Hollywood and elsewhere; developing “DFA LA”; creating creative initiatives with leading Silicon Valley and global technology companies; increasing visibility through sponsorships; integrating virtual and augmented reality technology initiatives in dance media; expanding live streaming programs; expanding global cultural partnerships; increasing benefits for DFA members through strategic partnerships; and increasing the endowment for production grants to dance filmmakers.

Finally, a few words from the new President of Dance Films Association:  “It’s a joy to be in a position to build on the vision set in motion by DFA founder Susan Braun 60 years ago, and most recently by our Board of Directors and Immediate Past President Greg Vander Veer.  I’m extremely grateful to the incredible DFA leadership team of Donna Rubin, Galen Bremer, Brighid Greene, and Rebecca Hadley, my collaborator and great mentor Marta Renzi, and to our Dance on Camera Festival curators Liz Wolff (Dance Films Association), and Joanna Ney (Film Society of Lincoln Center).  I look forward to continuing to preserve DFA’s legacy while expanding both our network and our programs.  And a special thank you to our DFA members, partners and collaborators. Join us as we inspire and educate all those who love dance, motion and the exciting art of dance on camera.”
