DFA at SXSW in 2013 Presented by Dance Films Association, this solo presentation will discuss storytelling approaches to making films with and about dance-makers and performance artists. The film director and interdisciplinary artist Alla Kovgan will focus on such topics as translating choreographic ideas into cinema, adapting choreography for the camera, negotiating formal languages of film and dance, challenges of dance film collaborations as well as the use of technology.  Dance film at SXSW Dance film continuously graces the annual South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Nine dance films (see them here) screened at SXSW in 2012 including a SXEncore of NY Export: Opus Jazzbrought back by popular demand. Other appearances include Dance on Camera Festival alum Keep Dancing, directed by DFA’s newest board member Greg Vander Veer screened in 2010 followed by DFA collaborator Celia Rowlson-Hall’s Prom Night in 2011. PinaDancing Movies A day of screenings of dance on film highlights innovative collaborations between contemporary dance artists, filmmakers and musicians. 

August 21, 2012 12:00pm-8:00pm Museum of Contemporary Art, MCA Stage 220 East Chicago Avenue This day of dance films features four screenings of dance on film that highlight innovative collaborations between contemporary dance artists, filmmakers and musicians. Selections include the Academy Award-nominated PINA (2011); All is Not Lost (2011), a collaboration between the rock band OK Go and Pilobolus; Fanfare for Marching Band (2012), a collaboration between Chicago dance filmmaker Danièle Wilmouth and the punk circus marching band Mucca Pazza; and the documentary First Position (2011). Curated by Sarah Best.
