This is NOT dance film…

..but it will introduce you to the founder of Dance Films Association – Susan Braun. In the clip below, Braun is interviewed by Billie Mahoney – a legendary hoofer serving on DFA’s Board of Directors at the time of the 1989 interview. Braun regales Mahoney with some amusing anecdotes about early days of DFA, which she founded in 1956. Remember back when VCR’s were a new market? – when Leonide Massine and Jose Limon walked the earth? – when member info would have been recorded in a “card file”? There’s even a mini-discourse on “how dance should be shot, or can be shot” and a brief run-down on early venues, in the years before Lincoln Center began hosting DFA’s annual Dance on Camera Festival.
