Jack Cole — The Genius, the Man, the Legacy
The Jack Cole Documentary Project is in its 10th year of evolution. The result is: Phase III, a clearly defined trajectory of the accomplishments, life and legacy of an acknowledged creative genius in the world of commercial and theatrical dance. Opening with a montage of today’s brilliant dancers and choreographers to illuminate and trace Jack’s influence from the Broadway greats of today, back through the choreographers and their muses to the source – Jack, himself. The various chapters will feature ((Not necessarily in this order)): (1) The Performer: his work with dancers in nightclubs, theatre and in film. (2) The Director: his almost magical ability to turn Hollywood glamour girls, the likes of — Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable, Mitzi Gaynor and Jane Russell into super stars. (3) The Scholar: his search for the roots of movement and the artists that influenced him. (4) The Man: his place in society, culture and human relations. (5) The Journey: Cole’s path from misfit to greatness. (6) The Technique: a discussion and de-construction of his definitive style and signature movement.
The dance world has been gifted with the legacy of Jack Cole – dancer, choreographer, director, educator and the acknowledged and undisputed Father of American Theatrical Jazz Dance. Today, the style, technique and passion of his work continues to flow through the blood, sweat and tears of each new generation of dancer. Today’s audiences and dancers have lost any knowledge of the source of their inherited skills even as the dance world continues to build on the inspiration of Cole’s innovations. The documentary is designed to provide a history lesson even as it dazzles with the brilliance, creativity and vibrancy of Jack Cole’ work shown so clearly through the Hollywood Stars and fabulous dancers his vision, drive and talent developed and brought to life.
