SUMMARY:Soma Songs
DESCRIPTION:Barbes\, Brooklyn 376 9th Street\, Brooklyn\, NY 11215 April 12\, 2012 7:00pm About Soma Songs The Soma Songs project brings together a group of acclaimed artists and designers from performance\, visual\, sound\, textile and film genres. Fusing digital dance\, choreographic screen processes with architectural cinema and sound\, the project develops an electro-shamanic ethos. We trace our stories of architecture from the first attempts to capture and hold space with stone. The skeletons of stone structures have sat with us for millennia. Light is both wave and particle. Light has consciousness. In Soma Songs we conduct this energy and its resulting memory. Read more and find previews here.

SUMMARY:University of Michigan: Dance on Camera 2012
DESCRIPTION:"The Dance on Camera Festival is one of those NY stealth events\, prized by its devotees...where the allusiveness of dance meets the intimacy of film to create a new kind of magic." —New York Times. Coming to Ann Arbor directly from Dance Films Association's 40th Dance On Camera Festival in New York City\, this screening of screendance shorts\, selected specifically for Ann Arbor audiences\, celebrates the immediacy\, energy\, and mystery of dance as combined with the intimacy of film. DFA's Festival is the oldest dance film festival in the world and has sparked a global explosion of screendance activity. FALLING Director: Adriano Cirulli Country: England\, 2011\, 5minA push/pull of dancers and gravity\, made by an artist who has created visual effects for 18 commercial projects including MERLIN\, the TV series. COUP DE GRACE Director: Clara van Gool Country: Netherlands\, 2010\, 26min A masterful screen adaptation of Ölelés (2003)\, this latest creation by Clara van Gool (best known for her screen adaptation of DV8’s Enter Achilles) explores the relationship between two adversaries who meet in a remote location and engage in a weaponless duel that is marked by extreme emotions and an intense movement style that oscillates between savage cruelty and unexpected warmth. These energetic matadors\, dancers Jordi Cortes Molina and Damian Munoz\, turn the reunion into a suspenseful drama. BLACK TRAIN IS COMING Director: John T. Williams Country: USA\, 2011\, 3min Inspired by a 1920’s sermon about Hell and Damnation by preacher Rev J. M. Gates\, this short blends old time religion with modern day Flex and Turf dance styles choreographed and performed by ENinja and Joyntz Scott to create a winner. TWO SECONDS AFTER LAUGHTER Director: David Rousseve Country: USA\, 2011\, 16min Weaving stunning cinematography shot in Java by Cari Shim Sham\, traditional Indonesian dance\, postmodern gesture performed by Sri Susilowati\, original Sudanese music\, and a potent narrative\, this stunning film creates a border-jumping dialogue on a universal irony: The heart longs most for the place called home to which it can never return. SPRING CLEANING Director: Pooh Kaye Country: USA\, 2011\, 8min Choreographer and film-maker\, Pooh Kaye’s alter-ego ‘Wild Girl’\, performed by Alex Clack\, has a busy day weeding the dandelions\, digging in the earth and swimming with the local beavers. LABYRINTH WITHIN Director: Pontus Lidberg Country: Sweden\, 2010\, 28.5min A haunting take on jealousy\, this existential thriller posits a man\, a woman\, and an elusive lover in a series of intense duets in a stark apartment that becomes a fourth character. Performed to a commissioned score by David Lang with cello performed by Maya Beiser\, the work features NYCBallet principal Wendy Whelan\, Giovanni Bucchieri and Pontus Lidberg\, a Swedish choreographer (Rain\, Mirror) also known for his work with Morphoses. FANFARE for MARCHING BAND Director: Danielle Wilmouth Country: USA\, 2011\, 15min Saturated colors\, exuberant music\, and ecstatic choreography fail to engage an immobilized public. The efforts of this ragtag musical militia fall on deaf ears until.....

SUMMARY:DFA Student Film Competition
DESCRIPTION:In its pilot year\, DFA invited high school students throughout the five boroughs to submit dance films between 1-5 minutes in length. Films could be documentary\, narrative or art films with any dance subject serving as inspiration: social or street dance\, dance in religious settings\, professional dance\, or non-dance images filmed so they evoke dance. Film submissions could also be inspired by existing dance films. The students were encouraged to address the relationship between dance and the camera\, linking the two in imaginative ways. DFA hosted multiple workshops\, led by Deirdre Towers\, Ellen Bar\, and Zach Morris to guide the students through the dance filmmaking process. We are pleased to announce the selected films! Congratulations! Breaking Pipes by Kaitlyn Cirielli Rebecca by Zach Paul Super Josh by Emma Huibregtse We Three by Anna Vomacka Introduction on Sunday by Ellen Bar with a clip from her film\, NY Export: Opus Jazz\, followed by a screening of the selected films and a Q&A with the student filmmakers. The winning student filmmaker’s work will be included in the closing night program alongside Check Your Body at the Door and freedom2dance at the Walter Reade Theater on Tuesday\, January 31 at 9:00pm. As a partner in supporting future filmmakers\, Dance Camera West will host the winner of the NYC competition at it’s annual film festival in June 2012. DFA envisions expanding the reach of dance film instruction and promotion for this competition within high schools throughout NYC and eventually beyond the NYC area. Tuesday\, January 31st 9:00pm Walter Reade Theater Thank you to our High School Student Film Competition Jury! Erich Rettstadt Valerie Rochon Zena Bibler

SUMMARY:THE SPACE IN BACK OF YOU
DESCRIPTION:THE SPACE IN BACK OF YOU Richard Rutkowski\, 2011 USA | 65 minutes TICKETS HERE Q&A to follow both screenings with director Richard Rutkowski. This visual and visceral documentary travels more than 20 years\, from Japan to New York City and back to Japan again\, in pursuit of the creative life of Suzushi Hanayagi\, a powerful\, innovative\, radical Japanese dancer and choreographer. Constantly willing to experiment\, Hanayagi challenged her art form and herself well into her ‘70s. From the discipline of early Japanese traditional dance to her decades of modern performance\, this bold indominatable woman uniquely bridged East and West\, choreographing works that expanded what classical or modern dance is and could be. Her life and influence is examined in detail with theater legend Robert Wilson who collaborated with her for over twenty years and found her suffering from Alzheimer’s in an old-age home. With cameras in tow\, he re-connects with her\, and he and his troup create their homage to her for premiere at New York’s Guggenheim Museum. The film is a final collaboration between a great teacher and her most renowned student. PRECEDED BY: La femme à la cafetière Robert Wilson | France | 1989 | 7min Inspired by a painting of the same title by Paul Cézanne\, Wilson wittily conveys the boredom of the figure within the frame\, as she passes her time\, nibbling sweets\, unmoved by the changes around her until she must relinquish her place to a successor. Co-produced by the Musèe d'Orsay\, INA\, and La September\, performed by Suzushi Hanayagi and Consuelo de Haviland.

SUMMARY:Dance on Camera in Poland
DESCRIPTION:Screening Program: AFTERNOON OF THE CHIMERAS Daniel Conrad\, Canada\, 2006\, 15 minutes Directed by Daniel Conrad and choreographed by Aszure Barton This film is built like a fugue in ten short movements. The images are lush\, in the way that Brueghel and Bosch are lush. The theme\, transformation\, is expressed by dancers in the roles of chimeras (mythological creatures made of parts of different animals\, e.g.\, centaurs\, minotaurs). It was shot in the extreme isolation of Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands)\, where the dancers and crew survival-camped for a month. Here\, chimeras cavort in thick moss\, volcanic rock\, roots\, tide pools\, seaweed\, and sheer cliffs. AMELIA Édouard Lock\, Canada\, 2003; 60m Intense and taut\, this film directed by Montréal's renowned choreographer Édouard Lock is an abstract work for pointe is a powerful interplay of extended intertwining solos\, intricate partnering sequences\, complexity\, and speed. Anchored by intricate partnering\, Amelia arrives at full tilt\, gathering and dispersing energy with the ferocity of a midsummer storm\, alternating its hard-edged encounters with unexpected moments of tender emotion and serenity. The women's pointe work has a classroom sharpness and precision while their arms fly free\, as if in flight. Lock designed the film\, adapted from his stage work\, by precisely choreographing the camera to the performances of the dancers of La La La Human Steps\, all within a minimalist environment made of wood and delicately lit by André Turpin. The original score for piano\, cello\, violin\, and voice\, is composed by David Lang and set in part to the lyrics of Lou Reed. REINES D’UN JOUR Pascal Magnin\, Switzerland\, 1996; 28m Six tumbling bodies on mountain slopes of the Alps\, caught between Heaven and Earth\, among the cows and the villagers. This strikingly visual and sensual film triggered a wave of understanding among dancers when it was shown in Dance on Camera Festival 1997. Marie-Louise Nespolo\, Christine Kung choreographed the work and performed with Veronique Ferrero\, Roberto Molo\, Mikel Aristegui\, Antonio Bull. CINÉTICA Ana Cembrero Coca\, Spain\, 2008; 25M (Jury Winner Prize for Best Short 2010) In this emotional journey\, this film shows through the body the ambiguity of a real and imaginary world where a woman searches\, dances\, fights or plays\, without separating what is lived and what is dreamed. Director of photography and music composer Jorge Piquer Rodriguez and the set designer Blanca Añón. Distributed by Playtime Audiovisuals. DANSE MACABRE Pedro Pires\, Canada\, 2009; 9M The director\, who worked with Robert Lepage on this stunning short writes\, “For a period of time\, while we believe it to be perfectly still\, lifeless flesh responds\, stirs and contorts in a final macabre ballet. Are these spasms merely erratic motions or do they echo the chaotic twists and turns of a past life?”

Rest by Cory Nakasue Rest is a study of fragmentation of time\, experience\, and perception. A found sound score from the outside world intrudes on the solitary confines of a place that is completely anonymous\, yet made extremely personal through movement. Windings by Zena Bibler Fallen limbs\, gray skies\, hushed whispers\, silent houses. A dance for the winds left behind. Windings is part of a series of site specific films that aims to capture something from a particular place without much premeditation or planning. These dances serve as postcards or snapshots—preserved views of places that are often in a state of constant change. What Comes Between Fear and Sex (Part 1: Vier/ Fear) by Anna Brady Nuse Fünf ‘n’ Twist depicts the emotional turbulence of a teenage couple. In this excerpt\, teenagers twist the night away under the authoritarian rule of a stern matron and the looming shadow of war. Director/Choreographer: Anna Brady Nuse Music: J Why Starring Donna Costello & Matt Sweeney photo credit: P. Roussetzki. (re)Action by Victoria Murphy (re)Action investigates the poetic boundaries\, passages and portals of what we call positive and negative space\, and\, as well\, it creates a conversation between image and score. (re)Action is an intuitive journey that sparkles with surprise and resolves unexpectedly\, thatencourages true attentiveness\, and enlivens as it restores. Together by Chisa Hidaka Recognized as Best Experimental Film at its world premiere at the Big Apple Film Festival\, Together: Dancing with Spinner Dolphins is the debut film of the Dolphin Dance Project. It portrays Chisa and wild Spinner Dolphins forging a tender relationship through the graceful language of dance in the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. While directing and performing in the film\, Chisa used principles of dance improvisation to work with dolphins that are completely wild\, participating voluntarily without feeding or any other coercion. To watch Together is to see the unfolding of a rare artistic collaboration between a human and completely wild animals. Together is a true innovation in dance and inter-species communication. It is also a poetic portrayal of the simple beauty of a human in harmony with Nature. Transformation by Sophie Kuller For this piece\, I have gathered different dance students from Juilliard\, Tisch\, and the Joffrey Ballet School together and asked them to listen to the music\, and improvise movement as a way of exploring who they are and how they interact with one another. An Ostrich Proudly by Alex Springer & Xan Burley An Ostrich Proudly\, a new film by alex|xan: the Median Movement\, features a woman defined by a space. The space is an empty barn\, the floor of which is brittle with debris underneath her feet. A man loiters. He draws nearer and nearer until she is well within his reach. He takes hold of her and she fights this; she is always fighting restraint to no avail. Her freedom is limited. Even from without\, the man positions himself to thwart her efforts to flee. It is a piece of unrelenting captivity and the woman’s own dismal and futile attempts to escape\, or not. It is reminiscent of bygone times and bygone motivations. It is melancholy\, beautiful\, and crushing. Shot at Kirkland Farms as a part of Dancenow[NYC]’s Silo residency\, the score is sound captured during the filming. Pinking by GK1 Productions Pinking is a short film we created to celebrate the varied landscape of our new home in NYC. Five women in pink dresses run across Brooklyn to ultimately reunite at the far edge of the borough in Coney Island.
