Dance on Camera Festival remains the longest-running dance film festival in the world, providing a platform for choreographic storytelling and creative expression, and intimate access to innovative media artists and their cinematic works. The Festival presents feature-length documentary and narrative films, inventive short films, filmmaker panels and special events, cutting edge media and art installations, as well as engaging community and student programs. Throughout the Festival, we will present talks with filmmakers and artists, culminating in a two-day summit on emerging movement education and production. Topics include: dance film training and education, live technologies, archiving, inclusion and disability, and virtual and augmented reality.
Lineup
Opening the festival is the world premiere of David Barba and James Pellerito’s Anatomy of a Male Ballet Dancer, an intimate look at the life and career of Brazilian ballet dancer and partner extraordinaire Marcelo Gomes, celebrating his 20th year with American Ballet Theatre in 2017. Dance on Camera Festival closes with the North American Premiere of Marie-Hélène Rebois’s In the Steps of Trisha Brown, a tribute to the retired postmodern dance icon that follows her original company restagers as they set one of the choreographer’s seminal works. Additional highlights include Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme’s Justin Timberlake & The Tennessee Kids, an immersive concert film capturing the final two shows of the pop star’s 20/20 Experience World Tour; a tribute to a seminal postmodernist, David Gordon with two made-for-television films shown as part of the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts’s ongoing installation ‘David Gordon: Archiveography – Under Construction’; a double bill of landmark dance film Martha Graham: A Dancer’s World, celebrating its 60th anniversary, and a new restoration of Crises, the only filmed document of Merce Cunningham dancing with his original cast; and much more.

Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the Film Society of Lincoln Center theaters are situated along 65th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Ave. Dance on Camera Festival showcases programs at Walter Reade Theater, which has reopened after a summer of upgrades in honor of its 25th anniversary, and at The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s landmark state-of-the-art Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, a multi-screen theater and cultural venue opened in 2011.

Each February in New York City, the Festival presents feature-length documentary and narrative films, inventive short films, filmmaker panels and special events, cutting edge media and art installations, as well as engaging community and student programs. Dance Films Association and the Film Society of Lincoln Center have co-presented the Festival since 1996, hosting screenings and special events at the Walter Reade Theater, with the addition of the Film Society’s landmark state-of-the-art Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center in 2012.
