Sunday January 14, 7pm, $10
For directions see www.galapagosartspace.com/directions.html
One of the objectives of this year's festival is to promote US artists making dance for the camera. Despite the difficulties of producing experimental media, US artists have been extremely prolific nevertheless, churning out work by the grit of their teeth and often with a gutsy, raw, DIY aesthetic that typifies American resourcefulness. Presented here is a small selection of some of the talented new filmmakers that are bringing the legacy of Maya Deren and other American dance film innovators of the past into the present. 8TH AVENUE and SHUFFLE HOP STEP pose interesting commentaries on the frenetic pace of urban life while SPRINGBACK/FALLFORWARD celebrates the vastness of the American landscape. New media trends are evident in KINETICUT, MICROCOSMATIC and THIRTEEN MOVEYOUS where movement and technology have come together in exciting partnerships. Other films bravely tread the emotional waters, and find authentic and powerful ways of expressing feelings and experiences. Curator Anna Brady Nuse
