Dance Films Association announces

3D Dance Film Production

NEW YORK (Monday, January 21, 2013) Dance Films Association, with the generous support of The Rockefeller Foundation New York City Cultural Innovation Fund, is proud to announce the production of CUNNINGHAM, a poetic feature film based on choreographic works of American modern dance icon Merce Cunningham, created between 1944 and 1972 – a period of formative risk and discovery. In Mr. Cunningham’s terms, the film is an “Event,” conceived as cinema and orchestrated using 3D technology. “CUNNINGHAM” is unprecedented, as no American contemporary dance choreographer has ever been the subject of a feature film of such scope and technological innovation. The “CUNNINGHAM” creative team includes an award-winning director Alla Kovgan (NORA); Robert Swinston, who worked at Mr. Cunningham’s side for thirty-one years and who directed the Merce Cunningham Dance Company’s final world tour, as director of choreography; Jennifer Goggans, who danced with MCDC for twelve years and served as Mr. Swinston’s assistant; and the OpenEnded Group, Mr. Cunningham’s collaborators on the digital décor for the dance BIPED, who will design graphic elements and visual effects for the film.   “CUNNINGHAM,” created by a special arrangement with the Merce Cunningham Trust, is produced by Derrick Tseng (PRINCE AVALANCHE), Joan Frosch (NORA, Center for World Arts, University of Florida), and Christy Park (Executive Director, Dance Films Association).   Dance Films Association is thrilled to extend beyond preservation and presentation of dance on film to full scale production of this 3D work: CUNNINGHAM will be a truly groundbreaking undertaking in the field of dance film in the United States.
