Dance Films Association Partners with Dance New Amsterdam to Host Yearly Dance Film Lab Series

DANCE FILMS ASSOCIATION PARTNERS WITH DANCE NEW AMSTERDAM TO HOST YEARLY DANCE FILM LAB SERIES

2012 Schedule Announced, Advance Registration Open

NEW YORK (March 28, 2012)Dance Films Association (DFA) announced today its renewed partnership with Dance New Amsterdam (DNA), to present the Dance Film Lab series. The Dance Film Lab (Lab) is a community-building, monthly series for dance filmmakers to gather; share information, methods, and tools; and address technical, practical and artistic challenges. The program is organized and directed by Zach Morris of Third Rail Projects, funded by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and takes place at DNA. Last year the program laid the groundwork with a sequence of workshops focused on various aspects of the dance/film making process.  Now in it’s second year, DFA has again partnered with DNA to take the Lab to the next level. The 2012 schedule will include Moderated Screenings of works in progress, Masterclasses  focused on editing and camera strategy, and Panel Discussions with experts from the field on topics including small-scale film production, fundraising, and distribution strategies. “Increasingly, artists from across disciplines are finding themselves drawn to the possibilities afforded by the intersection of dance/movement and film/video” says Zach Morris. “The Dance Film Lab has been designed to be a forum for these artists to gather; make connections; acquire skills; share information and resources; have opportunities to screen projects; and most importantly, be involved in a community and an on-going dialogue about this rapidly evolving artform.” Hailed by first year participants as “encouraging and constructive” with “Zach is an excellent moderator, corralling the conversation toward supportive feedback” the Lab has two distinct facets:
  • Moderated Screenings: which bring dance filmmakers together to present raw footage, drafts, works-in-progress and newly finished films to their peers for artist-centered, constructive feedback.
  • Master Classes or Panel Discussions where artists gather for in-depth skill-building centered on concrete, applicable techniques, methodologies and strategies led by top professionals focusing on filming/production, post-production and distribution.
The Dance Film Lab’s sessions have been designed to give artists a year-long series of events to bolster their creative efforts, provide access to high-caliber training, and provide forums to gather and share work. This year, DFA and DNA offer joint membership and advance registration for the entire series.
