Wabi Sabi

What is wabi sabi? According to Wikipedia, it is a Japanese aesthetic that “acknowledges three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.”

In the clip below,  meet Marlon-Barrios Solano,  founder and director of dance-tech.net – and DFA’s online strategy advisor – as he interviews choreographer Jill Johnson. Woven among performance clips, you can hear the two discuss Johnson’s work for Cedar Lake Contemporary Dance Theater.  Johnson worked for 10 years with William Forsythe in the Frankfurt Ballet, and discusses some of Forsythe’s influence on her improvisatory process creating The Copier with Cedar Lake dancers.
